Classroom Happenings! Week of 9/10

Your kids are doing an amazing job of transitioning into 3rd grade! This is a long post PACKED with important information. Please take the time to read. 🙂

Today in the back of their take-home folders is a copy of their Q.R. code badge so they can access their CLEVER accounts. Inside CLEVER they can now go to MobyMax and begin practicing their fact fluency for addition and subtraction.  You can find a CLEVER button on our classroom blog or the GES blog.

Please work through that process with them so we can “officially” begin fact fluency homework next week. If for some reason you are unable to access MobyMax via the CLEVER account email me so we can problem solve together.

Writing:

  • We are beginning our True Stories this week.

Reading:

  • Setting up routines for Reading Workshop.
  • Good job reading 100 minutes last week. A new log went home yesterday and is due back Monday.
  • Reading- We just finished Stories Julian Tells by Ann Cameron. We will move on to More Stories Julian Tells

Math: We have begun our first unit in math. It focuses on multiplication and division 0-5, 9 & 10. Each week I will let you know via the classroom blog which factors we are working on. PLEASE work on these same factors at home with your child.

If you do not have flash cards at home they can be purchased from the dollar store inexpensively. Sometimes there is a mad rush at the dollar store if this happens let me know and I will make paper copies for you here at school.

Begin with 5’s, and then once only 5’s are mastered fluently work on 2’s and review 5’s. At the end of the first unit, I will open up MobyMax to include the practice of multiplication and division.  We have 20 lessons and we are only on lesson 4 so you have a lot of time.

Building fluency with basic facts +, -, x and / will has a major impact on the ease of how students can think through complex word problems. I ask that you commit only 5 minutes each night working on these, along with 5 minutes on MobyMax.

Growth Mindset: We are learning all about Growth Mindset. Here are the main ideas that we have touched upon thus far. Ask your child about these things tonight. If they come to school tomorrow with a note from you about what they taught you, they will receive a Smile Buck! 🙂 🙂

  • Growth Mindset vs Fixed Mindset
  • Parts of the brain and what their functions are
  • Neuroplasticity
