State Testing Begins This Week

This week we will begin an intensive period of on-line testing — M-STEP, our state assessment.   To find out more about the test, please read this letter issued by the State Superintendent of Schools, Mike Flanagan:  M-STEP Parent Letter

Our fifth graders will take the tests over a 2-3 week period of time beginning Tuesday, April 14.  Fourth graders will take the test in the three weeks following this and finally, third graders will take the test the last three weeks of school.

Our Fifth Grade testing schedule is roughly outlined below.  It is critical that your child attend full day, everyday during the testing.   Once a student has started the test, they cannot stop until completed.  If the students stops midway through the test without completing it, all unanswered questions are wrong.

Please check your family calendar for any appointments that might impact the testing schedule on 4/14, 4/15, 4/16, 4/17, 4/21, 4/23 and 4/24.  Please change these so that your child’s testing is not interrupted.  Again, once a student starts the testing session, the session must be finished.

  • Mrs. Walenta, Mrs. Gort, Mrs. Ball will take the test every morning from 9-12
  • Mrs. Burdis’ class will take the test every afternoon from 12:30-3:30

Looking Ahead

Immediately following Spring Break, we will begin an intensive period of on-line testing for the state assessment.  This test, formally called the MEAP, is now called M-STEP.

To find out more about the test, please read this letter issued by the State Superintendent of Schools, Mike Flanagan:  M-STEP Parent Letter

Our fifth graders will take the tests over a 2-3 week period of time beginning April 13.

The schedule is outlined below.  Please look ahead on your calendar and reschedule any appointments so that your child does not have to leave school early on any of the dates listed.

It is important that your child attend full day, everyday during the testing.   Once students start the test, they cannot stop until completed.  If a students stops midway through the test without completing it, all unanswered questions are counted as wrong. Students cannot re-start the test later.

  • Classes taking the test every morning (9-12):  Mrs. Walenta, Mrs. Gort, Mrs. Ball.
  • Class taking the test in the afternoon (12:30-3:30): Mrs. Burdis.  Due to our scheduled testing time in the afternoon our class will be eating lunch an hour earlier at 11:25 on testing dates.

A Letter From Our Curriculum Director

Dear parent/guardian of fifth grade student,

Your child will be involved in taking the Iowa Test of Basic Skills the week of March 3. This is a norm- referenced assessment which measures our students against fifth grade students across the country in mathematics. This assessment will also provide us with information on each child’s verbal and non-verbal reasoning skills. The ITBS is different than the state MEAP assessment, as the MEAP measures our state curriculum standards only.

The results from the ITBS will provide another resource of information to compare to MEAP results and daily classroom performance when making important curriculum decisions, including necessary support services. Hudsonville Public Schools is committed to making sure we know everything we can about each student in order to provide the best educational opportunity.

As parents, you will be provided with the results of your child’s performance some time before the end of the school year.

If you have any questions, please contact your building principal.

Sincerely,  Karla Akins

Curriculum Director

MEAP Testing

Parents,
As you know from my earlier blog post (Oct 1), the MEAP begins this week.  I have listed our grade level test times below.  The test days are mandated by the State.
On test days, all students must be on time.  If they are late, and the test has begun, they cannot take the test that day. Late students will need to sit in the office until the test is completed and take the test on one of the make up dates (also mandated and determined by the state).
Furthermore, if you child needs to leave during the test time, any unanswered questions are scored as wrong.  We ask that you NOT interrupt the MEAP test schedule.
We want all children to do their very best.  This is a high stakes test and we want to do all we can to support them.
Thank you for your support!
