Dear parent/guardian of fifth grade student,

Your child will be involved in taking the Iowa Test of Basic Skills the week of March 3. This is a norm- referenced assessment which measures our students against fifth grade students across the country in mathematics. This assessment will also provide us with information on each child’s verbal and non-verbal reasoning skills. The ITBS is different than the state MEAP assessment, as the MEAP measures our state curriculum standards only.

The results from the ITBS will provide another resource of information to compare to MEAP results and daily classroom performance when making important curriculum decisions, including necessary support services. Hudsonville Public Schools is committed to making sure we know everything we can about each student in order to provide the best educational opportunity.

As parents, you will be provided with the results of your child’s performance some time before the end of the school year.

If you have any questions, please contact your building principal.

Sincerely,  Karla Akins

Curriculum Director

A Letter to Parents

Dear Parents,
I cannot believe  we are approaching the end of October this week already.  Our time together since early September as a class is literally flying by.

Parents have been busy planning our Fall party that is from 2:30-3:30 on October 31.  Everyone is welcome to join if they are able.  Just be warned, we might put you to work! 🙂  Today I told the kids that they should bring their costumes and that they would change into them after lunch.  Hopefully with all the excitement with the arrival of our Raey Guang visitors and our welcoming assembly today the kids all remember.  If not, well….we will just make the best of our day!

Today I sent home a take home essay question that will count towards part of their grade on the the kids final assessment for unit one in Social Studies.  Due to all the interruptions in our day today, I decided if some kids forgot I would make arrangements with them to complete this at school.

I wanted to let all of you know that this week is our last week toward our goal of 750 minutes of nightly reading for the month of October for the kids.  We are so close to reaching our goal and having our party.  We need 75% of the class to have the party, and the kids needed to fulfill their reading goal to participate.  Double check your child’s minutes and allow them a quiet environment to catch up in their minutes if they need to.

On Monday I had the substitute send home conference slips for each of your children.  In an earlier post I posted the entire schedule for your reference.  I have had a few minor changes to accommodate last minute schedule changes.  If you find your scheduled time just won’t work for you, please email me so we can make arrangements to meet at another time.  Parent teacher conferences are always such a pleasure for me.  I always look forward to sharing all the successes your children are having!

Finally, it has come to our attention that many of you have not been receiving blog updates.  We have learned that if you have subscribed to the class blog through the email subscription, your email notifications may be going to your SPAM folder.  Please go to your SPAM folder to see if this is the case. If this is the case, you can change your filter settings so that these emails go to your INBOX not your SPAM box.

As always, please do not hesitate to email me with any questions or concerns!

See you all soon,
Kym Burdis
